Help Seniors Find the Resources They Need

After spending time with my grandmother recently, I am still amazed at how sharp she continues to be -- and she’s been through plenty with breast cancer and then the loss of my grandfather. What worries me, though, is how she will fare as she continues to age. Like many seniors, my grandmother is contending with the issues that come up as we get older and have more limitations. But just because seniors have limitations doesn’t mean they can’t be prepared.

At Elder Action, we do our best to offer as many valuable resources as possible to seniors in hopes of helping them stay connected and maintaining a sense of control over their lives.

We try to share as much information as possible to help seniors continue to enjoy what life has to offer.  I can tell from your website that you are equally invested in senior care. Can I trouble you to post some of the valuable resources I am sharing below?

All the best,

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) and Medicare:
New Free Preventive Services
(other information links are below this article)

The Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as "health care reform" was signed into law
in March 2010. The law made several changes to Medicare, many of which are already
in place. These changes include new FREE Preventive Services. Preventive services
are medical tests and screenings to help you stay healthy and find any health problems.

People with Medicare now get certain pentive screenings for free.  Some of these
screenings include:

Bone Mass Measurement

Cardiovascular Disease Behavioral Therapy

Cardiovascular Screening

Colorectal Cancer Screening

Diabetes Screening

HIV Screening

Mammograms

Medical Nutrition Therapy

Obesity Screening and Counseling

Pap Test

Pelvic Examination

Sexually Transmitted Infections
Screenings and Counseling

Tobacco Cessation Counseling

Vaccines (Flu, Pneumonia, Hepatitis B)

"Visit www.Medicare.gov or call 1-800-Medicare for a full list of preventive screenings.

People on Medicare also receive a free Annual Wellness Visit.  During this visit, your doctor can talk to you about your health risks, review your medical history, and screen for depression, cognitive impairment, height, weight, blood pressure, and body mass index.  Your doctor can also set a screening schedule for you for the next few years.
*   You will not pay anything for these services (no co-pays or deductibles)
*   You may have to pay an office visit co-pay for screenings if the screenngs are    not done during the annual wellness visit.

Every year, take a wellness checklist to your doctor, and ask what screenings are important to you.  This is on page 51 of the 2013 "Medicare and You" book.  You can also visit www.MyMedicare.gov to print your own personalized list of preventive services.  Bring the checklist to your doctor during your wellness visit to talk about the preventive services you may need.
